Just checked in a LOTR book. They're called Oliphaunts by Hobbits and Mûmakil by Men.

And I don't know about you, but I'm a man not a hobbit. It would be hard to confuse a 6'1" tall man as a hobbit. So I'm calling them Mûmakil...even though the other word looks easier to use.
